This group, based in Seattle, Washington, will turn your CAD drawings into real usable parts. Their in-house workshop includes two CNC lathes, two CNC mills, a waterjet cutter, and a laser cutter. They also offer technical assistance, advice, and reviews of small and large CNC machines, and for metal and wood projects.
Sherline lathes, milling machines, and shop accessories are the tools you need to help take your modeling skills to the next level. Cannon barrels, winches, gears, shafts, wheels, blocks—ship model details of all kinds can be made to a high degree of precision and repeatability using desktop machine tools. They work just like the full-size ...
Then it will generate a G-code program so you can cut your gears on a CNC mill. David uses one of our Sherline CNC mills to cut his gears. He uses superglue to mount his brass stock onto a piece of aluminum. Then he cuts his gears with a .030″ (.7 mm or .8 mm) diameter carbide end mill at a very slow feed rate of about (0.2 mm/min).
Standard Equipment Included with Every Mill. Every Sherline mill comes with a DC motor and speed control, a 2.75″ (70 mm) x 13.0″ (330 mm) table with two T-slots, pulleys, drive belt, three hex keys, Tommy bars, oilers, lead screw cover, and a gib removal tool. The 5000-series tabletop mills come with two standard 1-5/8″ (41 mm) laser ...
We have also included some projects that were not necessarily built on Sherline tools but offer ways to make your Sherline workshop more efficient and fun. ... the headstock when using it in the milling configuration either with a mill or on a lathe fitted with the vertical milling column attachment. Installing a Chuck in a Taper Before installing the chuck in either the headstock or tailstock, make sure the male and tapers are clean and free of chips. A drawbolt is used to pull the headstock
Following is a list of the lathe and mill accessories. Click on any accessory part number below to see instructions for that part. The instructions are in .pdf format. Sherline also offers a printed book called the Sherline Shop Accessories Guide (P/N 5327), which is a collection of all the instructions and help sheets we have produced.
I have a SB10K and want to make a thread dial, just for the heck of it. The lathe has a 0.750" 8tpi acme leadscrew. I am about to cut the gear on my sherline mill. But before messing up, I should ask someone who does know better I believe I need a 32 tooth gear. I understand the logic of the thread dial, but I have never seen one or operated one .
So, with the gear blank cut, and the profile cutter ready to go, the cutter is mounted in its' fly cutter, and that is mounted into a Taig ready made arbor. Each tooth of this gear takes four passes of. the vertical slide, and each pass gets progressively less in-feed on the lathe cross slide. This is. because with each pass, more material is ...
micro mill and lathe such as Sherline's product lines with their precision accuracy is essential and 3) Sherline's CNC rotary table with its programmable controller is used in place of ... Gears based upon the cycloidal curve do maintain constant velocity between their two pitch circle diameters (P.C.D.) but this is only true so long as the ...
Finally, in 2007 Iqbal dominated the contest, winning both 1st and 2nd place with his tiny scale models of a Sherline 5400 milling machine and a Sherline 4000 lathe. These machines were clever choices to win the favor of the show-going public who did the voting. However, they didn't curry favor solely for their appeal as Sherline miniatures.

David submitted a second video showing five different models he built on his Sherline NexGen CNC ball screw mill and a Sherline DRO lathe. Each engine is running on compressed air. David said the Horizontal Engine was based on "Steam Engine Plans Only" listed by Kenny on eBay. "Because the engine, according to the plans, was too large for ...
Bevel Gear Cutting Page . 2/4/2001 (Please note that many of the referenced links are out of date and may no longer exist.) The following is a description of how I cut bevel gears on my CNC Sherline Mill and Lathe that I purchased from Backtrack CNC. The software that generates the G-code to drive the mill was written
The gear tooth cutter is included with the purchase of the indexing attachment and can also be purchased separately. It looks much like a small fly cutter and includes a 1/4″ high-speed steel tool blank that you can custom grind to the particular gear tooth shape you need. The cutter can be used in conjunction with both the indexing ...
Fly cutters are used primarily on a milling machine for machining large, flat surface areas. The fly cutter is a single-point cutting tool similar to a lathe tool mounted in a special holder. The cutter can be adjusted to cut up to a 2.00″ (51 mm) diameter and is easily capable of taking a .010″ (.25 mm) deep cut in aluminum at this diameter.
This allows gears and multi-sided objects to be cut on the Sherline mill, as shown in the text. See how the Sherline headstock assembly can be mounted on a bench lathe for milling operatons. Learn how to drive a Sherline headstock on a Sherline vertical slide with a sewing machine motor for gear cutting, as well as how to make the motor reversible.
Getting bigger machines down the road doesn't necessarily make the Sherline obsolete. I now have some larger lathes, and mill but I still often go to the Sherline for small work. Much higher RPM than the larger machines for one thing, quieter, smaller lighter tooling to handle and I have far more tooling for the Sherlines than any of my other ...

Thanks Kim, I was thinking of the 4000 series lathe with a Mill attachment. Actually, the company that sells Sherline products in Europe is TheCoolTool in Austria and rebranded as UniTurn/UniMill. They also make their own equipment under the Unimat name. I plan to visit them to discuss my options (they are in Vienna, not so far from me).

I purchased a Sherline 5400A and I want to add the necessary items to cut gears. Specifically what I'm looking for is the tool which I can hold or mount a gear blank. I can't seem to locate what would be appropriate in the Sherline catalog. So far this is what I have. Rotary Table. Vertical mount for Rotary table. Fly cutter.
