I'm not a piano tech, just a piano learner. A few months ago, I bought an old Baldwin Hamilton designer series studio - which was made in the 1990's. I contacted Baldwin (now part of Gibson) to obtain some info about the piano or its model in general. I provided Baldwin contact (on their website) with the piano's serial number. They did reply.

Posted By: Minnesota Marty Re: 1955 Baldwin Hamilton (advice needed) - 08/06/12 04:09 PM. The Hamiltons are proven pianos. They are workhorses and hold up in the most difficult of situations. The fact that is a one owner, residential piano, and not from institutional use, is a big plus. The usual recommendation from the members here at PW …

Dampp-Chaser installations, piano appraisals. PTG S.Jersey Chapter 080. Re: Please help me ID this Baldwin Hamilton. One other kicker is on the year the piano was built. The shop says that it was built in 1996 or 1997, however, Baldwin's website says serial number 397266 was built in 1985.
The Baldwin "Hamilton" model 243 is Baldwin's all-time best selling upright piano model. This is an exceptionally nice instrument that has recently come to us on trade from a one-owner non-smoking residence. It was built new in year 1977, has been well-maintained, and is finished in a lovely satin ebony cabinet. ...
The Baldwin Hamilton 243 was the preferred school piano in that time period. It should be Pre-Leverage buyout - Around 1980 Baldwin United (Baldwin Piano's parent company) went bankrupt and the Baldwin Executives bought Baldwin Piano and Organ in a leverage buyout. The Renewal Parts Business (Baldwin-Hamilton Company) first settled at the East end of Wilmington, DE, East 7th Street, next to the Old Swedes Church, in the shadow of the same RR tracks mentioned earlier, just north of the passenger station. The building still exists, although I had our very visible sign painted over when we left in 1975. ...

Hi. I'm looking to buy a 1963 Hamilton Studio for $1500. The workings seem to be in really good condition with some of the treble hammers having only faintest indentations. It sounds good and the action seems to be good (I am a non-player--this is for my 7 yr-old son). The only major thing is that the tuner selling it sprayed it with a lacquer ...
My tech says the 243s are great pianos, but doesn't know much about the 245s. Other than the furniture difference, which is a bit fancier trim but has no toeblocks so it's less sturdy. The serial # is 354640. It doesn't say Hamilton in the front anywhere. It says Baldwin in the center and Baldwin on the right side.
The difference between an electronic organ and an electronic piano is in the sounds produced. Sometimes, on the higher end models, the electronic piano will have a piano touch, weighted keyboard. I bought a Baldwin piano some years ago. I had it tuned and some strings replaced. I found out the piano was not a Baldwin but a Hamilton …
Scottsville KY. MSRP for the 243 (45") in 2000-2001 was just shy of $5M, though dealers rarely got full retail. Notwithstanding, the current resale market for pre-bankruptcy Baldwins is terrible. Corporate literature of the day (ca.1990s-2001) claimed all hard core lumber with veneers in the Hamilton casework.

There are a lot of nearly ubiquitous models. The Baldwin is going to be as good as its market competition. If you like it, and feel good about the dealer and whatever price you negotiate, then I don't think you need to be worried about buying one. Search US techs by Zip Code. "If it sounds good, it IS good.".
